(The Coming of) The Coming of the Terraphiles

FINALLY!

After all this dancing around the subject of Michael Moorcock writing for the iconic Doctor Who IP and talking Alien and Quatermass and Blake’s 7, Miles joins me in the Cloister Room as we just about get to The Coming of the Terraphiles…

Just about…

But with our tendency to go off on tangents AND 61 years of Doctor Who to consider perhaps it was inevitable that this would be a multi-part deal. Anyway, join us as we talk about Timelords, edgy 90s Who novels, 12p swiss rolls and much more besides… even a bit of Moorcock here and there.

My publicity shot for my ‘The Next Doctor Who’ pitch – who needs question marks when you can simply look mysterious/confused

  1. Now then…..how about doing “Hothouse” by Brian Aldiss ? Picked it up in that second hand bookshop a few years ago while picking up some Moorcock ( the meta temporal detective and winds of limbo 👍)….quite enjoyed it.
Darren Fletcher, Normandie ( I’m from St Helens, but last place I lived in UK was Brandesburton….used to shop at Kingswood Asda, East Hull….heard u mention you worked at HMO Hull…i was a screw at Full Sutton till 2020 and worked with some great lads who worked previously at Hull….p.s….whats the crack with patty n chips….double spuds !!!!)
    Keep up the good work

    1. Now then Darren! Aye I worked at Hull on and off for about ten years, plus a bit of HMP Humber. Happy days. Loads of good mates made in those days. Before that I lived in Skirlaugh, just a few miles down the road from Brandesburton. Some of my family are still in that neck of the woods.
I do need to get to some Brian Aldiss at some point so that so for the suggestion. I’ve never read Hothouse so I’ll add it to the to-read pile.
I also need to get back to Normandy. We used to go twice a year pre-pandemic. I miss it.

      1. Addendum:

The humble patty is the food of the gods, but (that said) that is why I tend to go with the princely patty butty after a skin full. Or during. Or before for that matter.

      2. Yea. . didn’t know much about Aldiss, so read it open minded…and enjoyed it…also enjoy the meta temporal detective, especially the Monsieur Zenith bit…kind of like a proto Elric. Do you remember Rob Jenkinson, Dougie Redshaw and John Bentham from Hull prison ? Top blokes .

      3. Aye ..John was a P.O at Hull and was previously a P.O at Full Sutton ..lives in Beverley…he retired from Hull and took an OSG , or what was an auxiliary job , part time at Full Sutton cis he was bored and wanted free use of the gym 🤗…he had a long running paddle tennis feud with notorious gangster, Curtis Warren…no screw could beat John, but John could nit beat Warren. I used to escort Warren to the gym from F Wing ( he was an High Risk Cat A )…where he would play soft tennis with Bentham, both hurling massive insults at one another…this started years previously when John was the security P.O at Full Sutton….close games…but inevitably ending with a Warren win…As I escorted Curtis back to the wing after an hour and half match, i asked him if John had come close ti winning. ” Yea…he has run me close, but so far I’ve fucked him off” Warren replied….funny old world…i still maintain that the closest tv program to real prison life is porridge ….kind of miss it, but at 57, i wouldn’t go back for a gold statue of Kieran Cunningham ! Great memories though

  2. I’ve not read it myself but you guys might be interested in Tom Vague’s writings about the Ladbroke Grove squatting scene in ancient days.
Title was “VAGUE 24: THE WEST ELEVEN DAYS OF MY LIFE” 1993

You might find a copy on Ebay for less than 56 squid. He’s not a bad writer but not the best journalist. His books on the Red Army Faction and the Angry Brigade were fun.

You guys are making my insomnia great again.
