After six or so years of mulling it over, and then deciding (whilst under the influence of Morphine in ICU at Bradford Royal Infirmary at 3am) to just get on with it… we finally had our first Rolling in the Ruins RPG microcon. 10 games over the space of Saturday the 6th of June with a Moorcockian theme and 35 or so willing travellers coming from as far afield as South Wales, Somerset, and one even all the way from Folkestone.
What a trip!
Things didn’t start there, though. On Friday we had a social gathering with all the folks that came for a full weekend experience of booze, pies, curries and all the other delights of Bradford.

Close to 20 of us put a few quid in the till of Jacob’s Ale & Pie House that night, before retiring for a healthy kip in preparation for that day of gaming.
This was my first ever shot at GMing at a con and I was pretty nervous, but I shouldn’t have been. Players maketh the game, and the players for my early scenario set in 1980 Bradford under the thumb of out-of-control Law were fabulous, fully engaging with the tone and spirit of what I was going for and I couldn’t have been happier. Well, unless I’d thought of some possible props earlier than the day before. All I need to do now is write my next one.
In the late slot I was delighted to have the chance to play Malcolm Craig’s second edition of Hot War, GMed by Malcolm himself.
And I started on the Guinness.
Which was delicious.

MVP GM of the day was Simon Burley, travelling up from Birmingham to deliver two games using his own Code of the Spacelanes system, with scenarios inspired by Moorcock’s City of the Beast and The Ice Schooner.

Simon is coming back for more on the 20th, too. What a champion bloke.
Saturday evening was a re-run of Friday as we retired once again to Jacob’s and had a few liveners with some of our day trippers before they hit the trains. Some folks went to sample the culinary delights of Bradford again, but I elected to partake of the Dinner of Champions.

To round the weekend off, we reconvened on Sunday morning with some stalwarts and recorded a special/lazy Breakfast in the Ruins quiz episode back at the Ginger Goose, fuelled by breakfast wine and stout.
Team Nuuuuurr’c’c vs Team Haaarshaastaaak in..
MULTIVERSITY CHALLENGE!
Some controversy emerged with me, the quiz master, fucking up a question/answer but fortunately the winning margin rendered the scandal redundant. So quiz done, we celebrated the winners and then had a final relaxing couple of jars with the last standing rollers.

What a magic weekend that was. Massive thanks to everyone for making it a fab weekend.
And we get to do it all again in a couple of weeks.
